 2010 Novice Champs

The Annual Championships for Novice swimmers in the Club were recently held at Totton Leisure Centre. The purpose of this event has 2 main aims. Firstly to give those swimmers who have yet to reach “Club level” or who are still taking lessons, an opportunity to compete against similar ability swimmers and gaining a taste of what it is like to compete in a swimming event. Secondly, the event is run, timed & judged by those swimmers who are at “Club level”, giving them some experience & understanding of how similar events they compete in are run, and maybe  giving them an appetite to go on to do courses in the future with a view to becoming a fully qualified ASA Official.

There were 4 age categories for both boys & girls – U9, 9-10, 11-12 & 13+, and 4 events in each age group, Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly, all being of 50m except the U9 Butterfly which was only 25m. The top 3 swimmers in each event all received medals.

Whilst it is not possible to list all those swimmers who took part, the results did produce some note-worthy achievements.

For the girls, Alexandra Walker in the 11-12 years age category produced a clean sweep, taking all 4 gold medals.  In the 9-10 age group, Cerys Ralph took gold in Freestyle & Backstroke, with Hannah Brackley taking the Freestyle & Breaststroke in the 13+ group.

In the boy’s section, Harry Cooper equalled Alexandra Walker’s achievement in the U9 age group with another clean sweep. Honours were even in the 9-10 group with Freddie Ide claiming gold in the Freestyle & Backstroke, whilst Adam Bowen took Breaststroke & Butterfly. Zayd Neseyif’s domination of the 11-12 boys was only held in check by Luke Ralph who took the gold for Butterfly. To finish off, the boy’s 13+ events were hotly contested between Steven Simpson & Rob Murphy, with Rob emanating Alexandra & Harry’s feat of taking all 4 gold medals.

The Club Officials would like to thank ALL the swimmers who took part for making the whole event worthwhile. Without you all, we wouldn’t have a club. Thanks must go also to the Club swimmers who did an excellent job in running the event, with a particular mention for Gemma Boyes – Girl’s Vice Captain 2010, for organising the “Officials” for the competition.

Tony Weston Memorial Gala

Saturday 15th May saw the Annual Tony Weston Memorial Gala at Totton Recreation Centre, hosted by Romsey & Totton Swimming Club.

The Gala is held each year in memory of Tony Weston who died in 2007. Tony had a 20 year -long association with the club, as swimmer, coach, Club Secretary & Vice-President. His swimming achievements included World, European & National at Masters Level & he was a British record holder for Breaststroke. Eye problems plagued him in his later years, and the care he received at the SGH Specialist Eye Unit enabled him to continue playing an active role within the club.  “RATS” invite other local clubs to take part, and a raffle is held during the event, with all money raised going to the Specialist Eye Unit at SGH.

All events 4 x 25m or 4 x 50m relays, and this year 5 teams took part including Romsey & Totton. The other 4 were defending holders of the trophy Salisbury Stingrays, Eastleigh & Oaklands, Hamble Otters and Andover.

Romsey & Totton got off to a fantastic start taking “first blood” in the girl’s 9-11 medley. All 5 teams went on to swim impressively and the overall result went to the wire. With only the Squadron Relay left, the 1st & 2nd placed teams were separated by only 2 points!

In the end, Andover were victorious winners on 166, followed by Hamble on 160, a margin of only 6 points.

Romsey & Totton’s team finished strongly in 3rd position with 120 points. The 9-11 girls (Rebecca Stevens, Jenny Bambridge, Gabriella Hebert, Aoife Gray) and the 13 & U boys (Will Mintram, Stephen Simpson, Nathan Hunt, Jack Kelly) swam particularly well, each winning 3 of their 5 races, coupled with a second & third placing, both scoring 22 out of a possible 25 points.

Mrs Diane Weston, Tony’s widow, was guest of honour & presented the trophy to the Andover captain, but most importantly of all £135 was raised to donate to the Eye Unit.

Tony’s philosophy was that swimming is to be enjoyed, and is fun. It certainly looked that way amongst all the competitors, who are to be thanked for coming along and swimming their best.

Romsey & Totton would also like to thank all those people & organisations (Moors Valley Country Park, Hillier’s Arboretum, Weymouth Sealife Centre, Longdown Activity Farm, Odeon Cinema, Blue Peter/CBeebies, Specsavers Opticians-Totton Branch and R. Cooper Landscape Specialists) who gave so generously to make this annual event such a success.
